Kari Wilhems, a Ball State anthropology student who has been attending the UU Church of Muncie for the past few months, shared some exciting personal news during Joys and Sorrows on April 30: She's been nominated for an Emmy!
"Remembering Freedom: James Clemens and The Longtown Settlement" was a project she undertook as a seminar student at the Virginia Ball Center for Creative Inquiry. [View the entire 25-minute film online.] The documentary has been nominated for an Emmy by the National Television of Arts and Sciences Awards Lower Great Lakes Chapter. Kari and a small group of students worked on the project with Kari as the main editor and director of it. It tells the story of a multi-racial settlement of people on the Ohio-Indiana line who lived, worked, schooled and went to church together in an integrated community that existed in the early 1800's.
Kari expects to graduate in May 2012. She is married to Joe Wilhems, and the couple have four children. Kari hopes to earn a Master's degree in Visual Anthropology with a focus on environmental sustainability.
