Delegates at the 2008 General Assembly selected "Ethical Eating: Food & Environmental Justice" to be the 2008-2012 Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI) of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. In support of our church's response, the Adult RE Committee will sponsor several Pre-Service Discussions on various aspects of Ethical Eating during the next few months.
The CSAI study topic provides an opportunity for our congregation to engage in some of the most challenging issues of our time: climate change and environmental degradation; hunger and malnutrition; animal rights and human responsibilities; social inequity, human rights, & environmental justice. Our church is encouraged to participate in the UUA's Congregational Study/Action Issue process. The UUA has an extensive Resource Guide that should be helpful to study and act on this issue.
Possible Actions:
- Support sustainable agriculture and farmer's markets. Encourage organic community gardening.
- Volunteer in support of community food pantries, Meals on Wheels programs, and similar projects that address the problem of hunger.
- Become an advocate for social and economic justice. Support farmers' cooperatives, "fair trade" associations, and other organizations that help farmers and other workers who produce food in the global market.
